DISSENT & the Jedi’s Dojo
Innovation Jedi’s have to recognize the difference between dissent & contempt. One is good for you and one is your fault. We must welcome unreasonable dissent – its good for us.
DISSENT (good for the DOJO) = the act of disagreement, difference of opinion, diversity of perspective
CREATIVELY CHALLENGE(healthy conflict)/offer alternate way of thinking/feeds each other’s curiosity
Belief: innovation jedi leaders…
- Welcome dissent
- Benefit from being curious about what they will learn from dissent
- Own responsibility for creating the environment for dissent to be viewed positively
CONTEMPT (not allowed in the dojo)= the feeling of disrespect & intense dislike (evidence of a belief of lack of power/lack of freedom…..choosing to view circumstances from victim orientation)
SUBVERSIVE, DRAMA-FILLED, COUNTER-CULTURE
– connect dissonance to our declaration of purpose
– admit potential for unskilled emotional responses that could veer off between the two

- Recognize the potential for “sideways dissent”=contempt” in oneself & others & openly inquire to gauge dissent or contempt intentions
- Own the responsibility for contributing to the environment where contempt is viewed as the only outlet for others
